The One Fish Hot Zones and Events

Hot zones and special events are the spice re:try turned up after day one of Early Access. The Small Update (8.13.26) increased special-event frequency, pushed events toward every other day, raised hot-zone rarity odds, allowed a chance to pull two fish at once, and made bites happen more often in those zones. The same patch made ship fishing junkier, nerfed enemy spawns while tying maximum enemies to party size, and reduced urchin catch rate during Urchin Infestation.

If your group still treats every tile of water as equal, you are playing the August 12 build in your head. This page is the map legend for the week-one water.

Why hot zones exist

The One Fish needs a reason to leave the boat. After 8.13.26, that reason is statistical: more bites, better rarity chances, and the comedy of two fish on one line. The cost is attention. Double pulls can be two clownfish—or a clownfish plus a bomb fish. Assign a Hazard watcher from the Co-op Guide before anyone sprints toward the glow.

Hot zones are not a separate game mode. They sit inside the same feeding run as How to Play. You still feed The One Fish. You just choose where the line hits so the appetite meter and the loot table both move.

Ship versus shore (and why junk increased)

Official notes say fishing on the ship now has a higher chance of catching junk for difficulty balance. That is a design slap on the wrist for AFK deck camping. If you need food in a hurry, get off the hull. If you are waiting for a friend to reconnect, junk fishing is acceptable—just do not call it a farm. Log the reconnect on Lobbies and Troubleshooting instead of pretending the deck is a hot zone.

Event cadence: every other day, on purpose

HOTFIX 1 already increased the chance of events during runs. 8.13.26 then adjusted frequency so specials show up more often and tend to land on that every-other-day beat alongside the shop. Your voice calendar should look like: shop day / event-or-hot-zone day / shop day. When an event does fire, name it. “Something is happening” is not a callout. “Urchin Infestation, watch the catch table” is.

Urchin Infestation

The patch reduced the urchin catch rate during this event. That is a mercy pass, not a free win. Urchins still punish greedy casts. Keep the Dangerous Fish lexicon ready and do not dump a full inventory of spikes into The One Fish because a meme told you to.

Mines and enemies

8.13.26 fixed mines not exploding when triggered and nerfed enemy spawns, with a max spawn cap that scales with party size. A six-player lobby is no longer a stealth buff; it is a denser arena. Duos should not copy six-stack panic. Read Size Modes if Big/Small shenanigans are also in the mix—those interact with cameras and player scale, which HOTFIX 2 had to repair.

Double-catch protocol

When the line might hold two fish:

  1. Caller says Double possible as soon as the zone is confirmed.
  2. Hauler does not mash; they wait for Safe / Hold / Bomb.
  3. If one fish is food and one is a hazard, hazard wins the call—feed later.
  4. Log both species on the Fish Checklist after the panic, not during it.

This protocol belongs in the Co-op Planner as a single sticky line. Groups that skip it will clip a funny explosion and then wipe the appetite.

Linking events to feeding

Events are not side quests. They either help you fill The One Fish or they steal the clock. How to Feed remains the win condition. If an event is spectacular but the creature is starving, leave. Chill Mode exists for spectacle without hunger—use Chill Mode when your group wants glowing water without a wipe timer.

What we will not fake

We will not publish GPS pins, fake spawn percentages, or a complete event bestiary until Steam notes or repeatable player evidence names them. If Friday’s update (August 21) adds new events, this page will grow a dated section instead of guessing tonight.

Practice loop for a four-player night

Warm up in a quiet biome from Biomes and Maps. On the first hot zone, run the double-catch protocol once even if nothing doubles. On the first event, force a name-and-leave drill: identify, decide feed vs abort, move. Then you can chase comedy. The One Fish is funnier when the appetite is not already in the red.

Hot zones reward curiosity. The ship rewards laziness with junk. Events reward groups that can say a specific noun under pressure. That is the whole lesson 8.13.26 tried to teach.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for The One Fish players.

Do hot zones really let you catch two fish at once?

Yes. Patch 8.13.26 added a chance to pull two fish at once in hot zones, along with more frequent bites and better rarity odds.

Why am I catching junk from the ship?

The same patch raised junk chance when fishing on the ship for difficulty balance. Leave the deck if you need real food.

Did Urchin Infestation get easier?

Urchin catch rate during that event was reduced. It is still a named hazard—call it and decide whether to stay.
